It’s Personal Prayer Journal Review

Hello Ministry Mamas! I was scrolling through Facebook one day when a friend of mine, Lauren, mentioned how much she was enjoying her daily prayer journal. I knew that if it was a blessing to her then it would be something that may benefit your life, so I asked her to give us a review of the It’s Personal Daily Journal by Steven B. Curington and sold by Reformer’s Unanimous.CE-111-2TYou can follow this link to the journals or click on the picture above to take you to the website where the prayer journal is sold. I love my “It’s Personal” journal. It has changed my walk with God dramatically. Instead of asking God for all the things I think I need and adding ‘if it is your will’ at the end, I now know how to properly pray the Lord’s will for each day of my life. The main purpose of this journal is to teach you how to ask the Lord what He wants you to pray for and then listen to the Holy Spirit as He guides you in prayer.

There are 5 main categories each day for your personal time with God:

  1. Notes from your daily Bible reading as well as notes for your daily Proverb.
  2. A place to record what God showed you through the preaching and teaching of His Word.
  3. Prayer time. This is broken up into four different sections-Praises, Needs, Forgiveness, and Protection.
  4. Questions for which you are seeking wisdom or advice.
  5. A place to record how the Lord leads or convicts you.

This is where you can record how God used you to encourage someone or how He moved in your life throughout the previous day. This sounds like a lot to do each day but it usually take about 45 minutes to an hour. There is an instruction CD that comes with the book that is VERY helpful in studying with this journal. On the CD it explains one way to use the journal if you are short on time is spend time in prayer in the morning and time reading at night. That way you get all of your personal time with the Lord, even if it is split up.

It's Personal Daily Journal Review

Benefits of using the prayer journal:

  • The journal has helped me to develop a more meaningful walk with God. I know how to listen to what He wants for me each day instead of guessing what I think I’m supposed to do and hoping it’s His will. Prayer becomes a conversation between two people instead of one person listing off their needs and running out of the door.
  • The double blessing of encouraging the right people. The encouragement section has been one of my most favorites in that there is a place where you ask God who HE wants you to encourage and how each day. I have had so many people come to me in tears, telling me that they needed encouragement the exact day and time that I gave it. Even people who I am close enough to know a lot about their lives-they were going through something that I had no idea about and the Lord used me to encourage them because I asked Him who needed it. In the past I have tried to encourage people and it seemed like they didn’t quite need it so much, that’s because they were people I wanted to encourage and not who needed it. Now the Lord tells me who and I get the blessing of helping people who truly need the help. It’s such a sweet thing to be blessed by trying to be a blessing to others.
  • The time spent with God’s teachers has been a blessing. So often I tend to only listen to sermons or lessons when I am in the church setting, but this journal showed me that I need to be doing that daily. Otherwise, it is to my spiritual life what missing a meal each day would be to my physical life.

Lauren's Bio Pic  More about Lauren:
Lauren and I went to the same church for many years and her brother and I were in the same grade. She was the little sister and was so cute (and still is!). She made me promise that I would not tell any embarrassing stories about her… and upon reflection I do not have any! Lauren could probably tell some stuff about me, that I hope will never resurface from the depths of my teenage years. If she ever does tell you anything embarrassing about me, it’s not true! I remember she had a sweet spirit and it is obvious that she still does. She was born and raised in Texas. She boasts she was “blessed with the most wise and loving parents on the planet!” (They are great people who I admire dearly.) She was saved as a girl after they came home from church one night and the Holy Spirit was convicting her about her sin and my need for the Savior. Lying in bed she asked the Lord for forgiveness from her sin and to be her Savior. Now she is married and work as a church secretary. Her husband is the youth pastor at her church and owns his own business. She enjoys working with her husband and for fun she likes to plan parties!

Hunting for a Good Marriage – Wedding Shower Devotion

Hunting for a Good Marriage

This was written for a ministry friend that is planning on hosting a hunting themed wedding shower for a young lady in her church who shares the love of hunting with her future husband. I love the idea of incorporating the bride’s interests into the shower with pink and camouflage decorations.

Hunting is its own hobby and sport. It takes a large amount of self-discipline as well as training in how to go through with killing the animal you’re hunting. Let’s think of just a few things that are required when you go hunting.

  • You have to have the right hiding place(s) – The Bible says that when you get married you are to leave your father and mother and cleave to your husband (Genesis 3). You should be hiding in a place where you are cleaving and close to your husband. Another place to hide is in the shadow of the Almighty, especially in times of trouble. – Psalm 91:1 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
  • Your hunting gear (clothes) – This is very important to keep yourself hidden and warm while you wait for your opportunity to make a shot. The wife’s proper clothing is found in I Peter 3:4,5 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:” This is not a popular set of clothing to wear because as these verses say, it comes at a great price. The cost is our words and how hard it is sometimes to put on a meek and quiet spirit! But when we do, it shows we trust God to take care of things in our marriage.
  • The right weapon – As a good clean gun is important to a hunter’s outing, the weapon of a good wife will be the same weapon as a good Christian, which is the Sword of the Lord, the Bible. The Word of God will help you defeat the enemy as he attempts to attack you as you seek to honor God with your marriage. The Sword will also teach you how to correct your own heart and ways (Hebrews 4:12).
  • The right sight – Not only is a good gun the most important piece on a hunting adventure, but you should have a good sight on your gun so that you can look through it and see the animal that you are planning on killing. There are other sights you should keep your eye on as you walk through marriage together with your husband.
    • Keep you sights on: The Lord, your husband, and your family.
    • Watch for the enemies – the wicked woman, laziness, distractions and/or relational substitutes
  • Take safety precautions – Just like when you are hunting and you typically wear hunter’s orange as a safety precaution to keep other hunters from shooting you, you should take precautions in your marriage. The most important thing to guard your heart against is hardness of heart because it is the cause of divorce (Matthew 19:4-8). Protect yourself against bitterness by forgiving and not going to bed angry (Ephesians 4:26). Practice doing good to your husband even when you do not feel like it because the virtuous woman gives us this example in Proverbs 31:12, She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

God and His Word will help you to be the best wife and hunter that He wants you to be. He is the best at watching out for us and helping us in our marriage. I pray and hope that the Lord will be always in your sight that you can walk with your husband for as many years as the Lord will allow you together.

God’s Missing Children: 3 Things Ministry People Can Do for Them

I stood staring tonight at the Red Plum ad, a photo had caught my attention of a red-headed young man, 18 years old. He has a beautiful straight smile and looked to be in great health. He has been missing since August of 2013 and in that moment I prayed for him. It struck me as odd that a young man would be missing, as most times the pictures are of little girls or young women, baby boys or toddlers, not teenage young men.

Then my mind wandered on down another trail. What if God wrote up a missing person’s report for all of His children that had gone missing?

God's Missing Children

The predators have taken many of God’s children through many lies and deceits. Other children who did not wish to be found simply disappeared from church and their families, with a heart set on pursuing their own desires. How many of them are in bondage, slaves to the sin of this world, voluntarily or involuntarily? How many of them are wishing for someone to find them again so they can return home?

Do any of God’s children wish to never be found again? How long have they shut out the Father’s cries for their return to Him?

Have others given up hope? What about the parents of those children? or the families and church families that have suffered heartaches through the years knowing their loved one was missing? What do they pray for and sincerely desire?

What does God the Father desire for His missing children?

For their return… the kind of return that reunites and creates a healed bond in fellowship and love. A renewed walk with God that will never cause them to go missing again.

God’s Search Efforts

Luke chapter 15 is the perfect chapter in the Bible that explains God’s different tactics. Verses 1-7 explain the parable of the lost sheep. The shepherd went out to find the lost lamb when he discovered that ninety-nine had returned to the fold and he did not. When he found him, he rejoiced and asked others to rejoice with him because what was lost was now found.

Verses 8-10 tell the story of the woman who had lost one piece of silver and searches her entire home in desperation looking for it. When she discovers it again, she also asks those around her to rejoice that what was lost had been found.

Verses 11-32 tell the familiar story of the prodigal son, who asked for his inheritance and walked away from his father. In his time of riotous living he was lost, but at the most humbling of experiences while found in the pig pen (a vile animal to Jewish people) he comes to himself, and returns to a father waiting with open arms.

The common thread in each of these parables is that the lost possession/person was not really lost to God the Father. The first two had a similar endings where the sheep and coin were searched for. In the prodigal son’s story, the father allowed him to go and did not look for him but instead waited in faith for his return. I think this speaks of how God’s ways of dealing with His missing children are not always the same. Sometimes the missing children will know God is looking for them because the Holy Spirit has gone out to find them, speaking to their hearts in even their sinful situations time and time again, “You’re out here all alone, come home with me.” Other times, the foundation of Biblical knowledge will hit them in the time where they are most humbled, and they will remember the things they have been taught in that moment and make a choice to repent and turn back to the Father. The result, no matter how the Father works in the situations is that the return is to be a joyful event.

How God’s Missing Children Effects Ministry People

In ministry watching God’s children go missing hurts every time. Every saved person that is part of a church family leaves a hole, like a missing puzzle piece, that makes the local church body incomplete. There have been times that in being able to perceive what will likely happen in people’s lives, you can easily become angry at them (like the prodigal son’s brother) for running off and mocking the righteous lifestyle that you are trying to live. Or you become angry at God like Jonah, for giving them another chance when it seems like they have wasted so many resources, time, and relationships. But like God said to Jonah, “Doest thou well to be angry?” (Jonah 4:4 and 4:9). No, we have to keep things in perspective.

Things We Can Do for God’s Missing Children

  • Pray for God’s missing children to return and be restored and pray for yourself not be tempted. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Galatians 6:10
  • Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading when He may prompt you to go out looking for God’s missing child. I think sometimes that is one of the basis for having a visitation program, to check on those who have seemed to wander away from the fold. There are other ways in which God may prompt you, and I pray you will follow that leading, no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable it may be.
  • Rejoice in their return. Many times we hesitate when someone walks through the church doors that we have not seen in a long time especially when we were there to give them counsel and they still did what they wanted or we were there when they were heartbroken needing help and they still remained. We wait in our own way to protect ourselves from what may be a “short-term turn-around.” Deal with them like God does, even if it is short-term, tell them you are glad to see them back and you have prayed for them. Treat them the way you would want to be treated if it was you.

I am thankful that when in my life I was the missing person that God never gave up on me! I  hope you can remember the ways God has done the same in your life and use those experiences to love God’s missing children.
