My Son’s Answered Prayers

Uno, our oldest son, is about to turn 9 in November and I was able to witness God answer ones of his prayers in a most special way. These are the stories about ministry and the Christian life that I love to hear, but when they happen to those you love it seems to hold a particularly special place in your heart.

We have lived in our neighborhood for five years now and it has been very hard for us to get to know the neighbors. Beyond first introductions and conversations here and there we really only see them one time a year they get together out in the street and pop fireworks on the 4th of July. We all bring out lawn chairs and let the kids play with sparklers and watch the adult men run like wild Indians to get away from the fireworks before they go off.  Even our next door neighbors with sometimes 7 children (with their foster kids) do not even go into the backyard very much. The culture here is very different from the friendly Midwest where we lived before, and it has been hard for us to connect and overcome the barriers that everyone seems to have.

Uno ~ Late Summer 2013

Last October on an especially warm day, a boy around my son’s age, whom we will call “Blake” rode his bike down by our house while our kids were riding in the cul-de-sac. He quickly befriended Uno and they were off to racing around. He was friendly to all of us and very kind even to our younger girls. Uno has listened for years about how we need to invite friends to church, so within the first few minutes he ran inside of his own accord and picked up an invitation to our Fall Festival. When Blake returned from a trek home, he tried to give him the invitation but he said, “Oh, that’s okay, I can’t take that because we don’t go to church.” Our son did not seem phased but was secretly disappointed. I encouraged him that he had done his best and that is what that mattered to God.

For several weeks we would purposely sit outside even in the chilly weather hoping that Uno could see Blake again and spend time with him. He quickly became the primary prayer request when we prayed for lost people. Our entire goal for getting to know him and his friends is for their salvation. Despite our efforts our children have not ever had visitors outside of family members come to church before. This has always made our son feel disappointed when there are big incentives at church for children who bring visitors, so he has desired this for a long time.

We saw Blake several times off and on through the winter and spring and cheerfully wave to him as we drove by. His dad fixes up mini-motorized bicycles and we see their garage door open often. This summer we were able to spend a little more time with him and meet his little sister, “Briana” when we were prepping for our garage sales. I would leave our garage open and all the kids would play either in the garage or on the street. It was good for them to be over at our house for me to see how they behave. Blake and his friends are all very respectful and treat each other nicely (at least in front of me!) and that is something I appreciate.

The opportunity to invite Blake to church has been difficult but Uno has never given up on him. Then, this week the answer to prayer came…unexpectedly.

We had a Family Crusade this week and my son had been itching to go down the street to invite Blake and his friend Marcos. We had not taken him down prior to the beginning of the crusade, but Uno’s persistence paid off when my husband took the time to take him down the street with our guest speaker, Ed Dunlop. Bro. Ed normally does Kids’ Crusades around the country and has had experience building bus routes for churches also. He carries with him a pocket full of balloons so that he can twist them into fun things kids enjoy. His strategy is to give them away at the door so that it will give the family time to let down their guard and be open to receiving the information about the crusade as well as the gospel. I think in this case it worked!

After a while, I heard Uno and Dos come in the door and instantly they said “Blake is going to ride the bus!” I think my jaw dropped and I did a double-take because that is nothing short of a miracle. In my heart I had always hoped but with the negative responses I was doubtful, which was evidence of my own little faith.

That evening, we were pulling out of our driveway and I was able to witness when the bus arrived in front of Blake’s house. Blake came out and then out came his younger sister, Briana. His mom came out to greet the bus workers with a smile.  The workers talked to her for a few minutes and she gave the kids a hug and they stepped onto the church bus for the very first time in their lives and then into church for the first time.

In the middle of the church program Blake looked over at Uno and said, “This is really fun!” On their bus ride home, Blake was already planning to come the following night with hopes that he could bring enough visitors to win the 24 inch pizza given away every night for the person that brought the most visitors. He came the next night and brought his older sister, Brittany, and two other neighbor kids, Anna and James. On the last night all of those friends came back and Marcos too.

We were amazed at God’s answers to our son’s prayers and the eager desire Blake had to bring his friends with him to church. We were not expecting the number of results from God’s Holy Spirit working in their lives. Blake’s sister Brittany, and his friends Anna and James received Christ to be their Saviour!!

It took one year of prayers, invitations, some bright-colored balloons, Bible-centered messages about salvation by Bro. Ed, and friendship for these results. Uno is excited to know that in inviting one friend, three souls have been changed for eternity. These souls are the eternal rewards to which he will cherish, FOREVER. We are not done praying yet, we still have our prayers focused on Blake, Briana, and Marcos… and of course their families.

Please encourage your children not to give up on those who God has laid upon their hearts, because they really do not know when God will answer them. Every day they are one day closer to the answer! (And that goes for you too!)

How God Provided: Blessings Beyond Measure

Do you ever have weeks where you are pinching pennies and wondering how God is going to come through to provide your needs for you? We had just one of those weeks not long ago and I think God just wanted to comfort me in ways to tell me that He loves our family and that He’s taking care of things in His own way.

One of the last times I wrote about God giving me my filing cabinet, I told you about how God will answer older prayers and will give you the desires of your heart that you were not even thinking of anymore. In this particular instance that I am going to write about God gave us things that we had not even prayed for or asked Him about. He just rained down blessings beyond measure in our lives, we are so blessed!

During the week I’m talking about we had enough food to last us through the week, the bills were paid, we just were not going to be able to do anything extra. Blessings Beyond Measure

On this particular week, our church held a western-themed revival and almost every night we  came home with a blessing. On Sunday we had a big “free” church meal with our church family and on Sunday night a lady gave me a pink cowgirl hat to wear. On Tuesday we were handed an extra-large bag of homegrown bell peppers. Wednesday night, we were given two music CD’s of the music group we had in for our revival. On Thursday, we were given a new-to-us table and chairs from an elderly lady that was a friend of a church member. It was an upgrade greater than we would have bought for ourselves. On Friday, they picked up a hutch from the same lady and brought home two more chairs for the table. On Saturday, toys and games for the kids from my husband’s grandparents who came through for a visit. Sunday, a handful of cash for our upcoming vacation was handed to us.

When all the things started to add up through the week, it began to become very humbling. God orchestrated each gift for us in a special way. My husband and I have never forgotten a quote we heard from a preacher during chapel in college, “When you give all you’ve got to God, you’ll never go without.” That week God was not just giving us means to live, He was giving us the sprinkles on top too!

So many ministry people out there wondering does God even listen? Does He care? Does He hear my cries? Because they feel like they are giving it all they’ve got to God in their home, family, and ministry and they feel like they have nothing left. The answer is: Yes! He knows how to bless us abundantly in special ways to make us feel like the song lyrics say, like you were His only child.

You can listen to these sweet girls sing a part of the song “He Loves Me Like I Was His Only Child,” in the link below.

God never uses the same tactics, He likes to bless us unexpectedly as much as He will answer us in the matters that are expected. He is a wonderful Father! Sometimes we may feel that He is running late but His blessings and helps are always in His perfect timing.

If you serve Him, He does not leave you alone on the path. When you have only the money in the jar on your bedroom dresser, He will show you in a special way that you are like “His only child.” He is an ultimate provider in physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.

You will have weeks where you feel like God withholds His blessings and you cannot see through the clouds that have settled down on your pathway of life. Other weeks God will shovel blessings you were never expecting down into your life that will make you realize how He never did leave you or forsake you. He was loving you all along and these blessings are going to be meat for your heart to help you carry you through those cloudy times in your life when He may be silent.

If we added up all the blessings beyond measure that God has given us throughout our lifetime, it would blow our minds!

  • Have you seen the Lord work in your life this week or last?
  • What memorable piles of blessings can you remember that God gave you in the past?
  • Have you thanked Him for those things?

The blessings beyond measure are more than material, they are even spiritual things that I have not mentioned specifically here. With God as our Father we have a wonderful life.

Luke 6:38  Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

P.S. Remember, when you give it all you’ve got to God, you’ll never go without!

7 Recommended King James Sunday School Curriculums

Exclusive King James Sunday School Curriculum is hard to find! I did research and asked friends what they use to be able to compile this list. I want you to know that the majority of these curriculums are written by Baptists. The other curriculums I have used before that have been doctrinally safe, so that is why I recommend these 7 Sunday School Curriculums.

KJV SS Curriculum

Glow Publications Junior Church Curriculum Guides – I have heard great things about this curriculum from a ministry friend of mine. I first became acquainted with this company through their monthly devotional booklets for teens, and now I see they also have devotional books for children. I always enjoyed the stories inside the devotional booklets because they gave great application to Biblical truths, so I am sure that their Junior Church curriculum will be great as well. Cost $1.60 for a downloadable .pdf file or a booklet for $5 to $7.50.

Regular Baptist Press – I have also used and taught some of the 2’s and 3’s curriculum for Junior Church. In my experience it has good take home papers and visual aids to help me teach. I like how the teacher’s guide helps me come up with activities to reinforce the lessons. You can find curriculum for a range of different age groups to choose from under the Sunday School tab. Make sure to look for the KJV materials, because they also sell curriculum containing other translations.  Teacher’s Guides $6.99 Teaching Resources Packet $16.99 Take home papers also available at a fairly low cost.

Striving Together Publications – 5 Different Curriculum packets are available including: Stories of Grace, The Sacrifice of Our Saviour, The Signs of Our Saviour, The Steps of Our Saviour, and The Stories of Our Saviour. Our church has used this curriculum in our summer Wednesday night program for kids and it has been easy enough for our teens to teach the kids about the Bible. Teacher’s Edition Books $16.95 and Visual Aid Packets for $34.95. Other teaching resources are available. *Note: A friend of mine mentioned that not every story in the curriculum is included in the Visual Aid Packets, so this may be something you want to keep in mind.

Bible Basics KJV Curriculum has a great range of curriculum – Preschool, Kindergarten, Beginner, Primary, Junior, Young Teen, Teen, Young Adult, and Adult. You can find this easily under Church Supplies, then Sunday School Curriculum. Teacher’s Guides range around $4.50 and Visual Aids cost around $8.50. They also have Make & Take booklets for many age groups for as low as $3.15 each. This website, The KJV Store is run by a distant cousin of mine that only sells KJV products in their online store.

Joyful Life Sunday School Curriculum – Teacher Guides cost $6.95 and Posters for teaching cost $11.50-$22.75. The Joyful Life website allows you to view many pieces of the curriculum and has a downloadable order form. If you would like to make your purchase a little more simple, visit Christianbook.com. Joyful Life also has a good choice of visual songs available to teach in your class, this curriculum is published by Abeka.

Accent Curriculum can be ordered easily from SundaySchoolDirect.com but viewed best at SundaySchool.com where you can also try sample lessons.  The Teacher’s Manuals cost about $7.45*, Teacher’s Resources book is $16.50*, and the Classroom Kit (including Teacher’s Guide) costs $28.99*. This is a curriculum that I have worked with before in Junior Church for 4 and 5 year olds. It was easy to teach the kids because the visuals and teaching suggestions are full of help for the teacher to come up with ideas, songs, or games to reinforce the lessons.  *Prices vary between the two websites.

Bible Characters Curriculum. There are 5 volumes for the Bible Character Series for $15 each. There are around 25 lessons per book that focus on a Bible person and a specific character trait associated with each lesson. There are many other options available from this ministry in Kokomo, Indiana in their Ebay store. This curriculum came highly recommended from a ministry friend in Utah that has used 4 of the volumes to teach through an entire year. She liked that it was good for 8 year olds and up because it has activity pages included. She did say when she worked with younger children she would just find a coloring page online to print that was associated with the lesson.

As  you search for the perfect curriculum for your church ministry I challenge you to get samples if you can, borrow from friends, ask questions, do your research before you take the plunge and buy. You want to find something that matches your Biblical beliefs, teaching style, and will help you be able to have the resources to teach your class whether it is big or small. My greatest recommendation is to take the time to pray and ask the Lord what materials He would like you to use. Teaching what God wants you to is the most important thing of all!

As always, if you have any other suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me.
